Traverse system for the Vectrino

The UK company HR Wallingford has developed an automatic traverse system for the Vectrino, that facilitates highly accurate positioning of your probe(s) in the flume. Pre-programming of the system via Labview also makes it possible to let the experiment run overnight, without actually having to be there.

This is what Vectrino users around the world have been waiting for. The HR Wallingford instrument traverse system is used to move Vectrinos to a variety of different positions within a flume or basin. The instruments are secured to the vertical axis of the system, using a variety of proprietary fixings. The vertical axis is attached to a carriage which moves along a fixed horizontal beam to allow positioning of the instruments anywhere within the flume or basin. The traverse can be controlled by a computer to log the exact position of the instruments within an accuracy of ±2mm in both the vertical and horizontal axis.

The drive routine is used to position the instruments for defined periods before the traverse moves them to the next position. This routine can then be repeated using a datum position either on the carriage or using an independent external datum reference point in the basin. The length of the horizontal beam can be adjusted dependent on the facility’s requirements.
